The 2016 MX-5 Goes Back to its Roots

2016 MX-5
2016 MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 is an iconic model representing Mazda’s vehicle-engineering philosophy—the pursuit of driving pleasure. “Innovate in order to preserve” was the motto for the fourth generation, as the development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can. It achieves this through the adoption of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and refinement of its appeal to the senses and sensations through which people enjoy cars.

Mazda Unveils All-New Mazda MX-5

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today celebrated the unveiling of the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 (known as Roadster in Japan) together with fans at events held simultaneously in Japan, USA and Spain. The all-new MX-5, which adopts both SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design language, will be rolled out to global markets starting in 2015.

The design of the all-new MX-5 reveals another layer to Mazda’s KODO design language. The exquisite proportions make the driver and passenger stand out, and both the interior and exterior evoke the exhilaration of open-top driving. It is the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far and is more than 100 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces, promising a dramatic leap in Jinba-ittai driving fun.

As of July 2014, total production volume of the Mazda MX-5 exceeded 940,000 units and it continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car. This highly-celebrated model has received over 200 awards from around the globe including Japan Car of the Year 2005-2006.

Moving forward, Mazda will continue to develop products which offer all customers driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

2016 Mazda CX-3!

2016 Mazda CX-3

The All-new 2016 Mazda CX-3 Compact Crossover SUV

Mazda debuts the 2016 Mazda CX-3 at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. The new compact crossover SUV is the fifth model in Mazda’s line-up of new-generation vehicles that feature the full range of SKYACTIV Technology and KODO—Soul of Motion design. The CX-3 offers all the essentials people look for in a vehicle; a design of overwhelming quality and style, packaging developed solely with the customer’s ease-of-use in mind, and the responsive driving feel that Mazda strives for in every model.

In pursuing a design of beauty and sophistication, the essence of KODO—the expression of life within a vehicle—has been evolved to produce a sharper form with an enhanced sense of speed. In the interior, meticulous attention to detail regarding the materials used has created a cabin environment of impressive sophistication and quality. In terms of driving performance, the CX-3 adopts the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies, carefully crafted to match human sensibilities. This realizes driving pleasure with faithful response as well as excellent environmental and safety performance.

The powertrain for North America is the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine, which along with Mazda’s new-generation AWD system delivers powerful and linear driving performance and outstanding environmental performance. To enhance the customer’s driving pleasure, the model also offers a wide range of Mazda’s latest technologies, including the Mazda Connect infotainment system and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features.

With Mazda’s latest design and technology, the Mazda CX-3 is a vehicle to suit the customer’s creative lifestyle in any scene, from inner-city driving to enjoying the great outdoors. The model will go on sale globally, starting from Japan in spring 2015 and is expected to become a new core model in Mazda’s line-up.

Pursuing sophisticated beauty with the latest iteration of KODO
The CX-3 design pursues beauty and sophistication, while expressing Mazda’s KODO design language in the most stylish fashion. Its powerful and highly vital form creates a pure expression of the vehicle Mazda’s designers themselves wanted, one that is not fettered by conventional classifications of vehicle type. The design team worked to create a straight expression of beauty and radical styling for the exterior. Achieving this involved an uncompromising approach to refining the proportions that form the foundation of its beauty and painstaking efforts to eliminate every unnecessary element. For the interior as well, a concerted effort to achieve the appropriate expression to the ambience and fine textures of the materials used realizes a high-quality, sophisticated cabin environment.

Human-centric packaging aimed at true ease of use
In addition to applying the latest iteration of the KODO design language to realize stylish proportions, CX-3 development also secured an adequate amount of space. The aim was to achieve a package that properly represents Mazda’s vision of what a vehicle should be. As a result, the CX-3 offers ease of use that is unique to its crossover SUV packaging. It provides drivers with the clear view they need, is easy to enter and exit, and realizes a seating position with a low center of gravity that lends a reassuring sense of confidence when driving. It also adopts the advanced Mazda Connect connectivity system, which supports the customer’s active lifestyle.

Driving Dynamics
Dynamic performance that provides unrestricted driving enjoyment
Mazda is in constant pursuit of driving pleasure and faithful response to the driver’s will. Having the vehicle respond exactly as expected to the driver’s actions connects directly to the pleasure of the Jinba-Ittai driving experience and cannot be achieved merely with power and speed. Based on this philosophy, the CX-3 development team focused on delivering ease of handling on city streets, reassuring confidence on the highway, and particularly on faithful response when negotiating gently curving rural roads. By fully adopting SKYACTIV Technology and tuning all the characteristics to match human senses, Mazda produced light, linear response to the driver’s actions along with the handling stability that the Jinba-Ittai experience requires. The powertrain offering for North America is Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0. Also introduced is a new-generation AWD system. Powerful dynamic performance with linear response and excellent environmental performance provides unrestricted driving enjoyment.

World-class safety underpins the pleasure of driving the CX-3
Based on Mazda Proactive Safety, every effort is dedicated to minimizing the risks that can lead to an accident and maximizing the range of conditions in which the driver can drive safely and confidently. Active safety measures to help identify potential risks early on and reduce any chance of damage or injury include the adoption of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies. These enable the driver to enjoy every outing, whether driving on city streets, on the highway, or on winding roads. Passive safety features build on Mazda’s high-strength SKYACTIV-BODY. Dedicated effort went toward providing occupant safety, including the seatbelts and airbag system, and also toward helping protect pedestrians. The result is truly excellent safety performance, and the Mazda CX-3 is fully capable of earning high-level ratings in collision tests around the world.

Active safety

Adoption of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies, which use sensing devices such as milliwave radar, ensures the driver can enjoy safe driving in any scene, whether driving on city streets, on the highway, or on winding roads.
Passive safety

The CX-3 employs Mazda’s high-strength SKYACTIV-BODY, which effectively absorbs impact energy from any direction to suppress cabin deformation. This delivers collision safety performance capable of earning high-level ratings in tests performed by organizations in different regions.
•A variety of safety equipment and mechanisms are employed to protect occupants in the event of an accident. This includes an SRS airbag system, a front seat structure that firmly supports the occupant’s head, and door armrests designed to absorb impact energy.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The 2015 Mazda3 and 2015 Mazda6 have been named to Car and Driver’s 2015 10Best Cars list, marking the 31st and 32nd times a Mazda vehicle has been awarded a spot on the long-running, highly coveted Top Ten list.  This also records the brand’s 13th consecutive annual appearance.  Mazda is the only company to have two cars named to the list.

Completely redesigned last year, both Mazda3 and Mazda6 feature the full suite of efficient SKYACTIV®[1] technologies and wear the handsome character lines of the KODO “Soul of Motion” design language.  Both vehicles also feature a slew of technology with the safety-first i-ACTIVSENSE, capacitor-based regenerative engine braking i-ELOOP system and MAZDA CONNECT™,  a next-generation, driving-focused in-vehicle connectivity system.

“Mazda is honored to again be part of Car and Driver’s 10Best list, a distinction which proves that the best cars don’t have to be the most expensive, most powerful and most out-of-reach for consumers,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).  “Both recently redesigned, Mazda3 and Mazda6 entered their respective segments as already established dynamic-driving benchmarks but also surpassed expectations to lead the way in fuel efficiency, safety and in-car technologies.”

The 10Best nomination process has three official restrictions: the vehicle cannot exceed an $80,000 price tag; a sample vehicle must be available for testing by mid-September of the current calendar year; and the vehicle must be on sale to the public by January of the following calendar year.

“10Best list is made up of vehicles that offer the most value, that elegantly and comprehensively fulfill their missions, and that engage their drivers in spirted conversation,” said Eddie Alterman, Car and Driver Editor.  “Since their introductions as all-new 2014 SKYACTIV models, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 embody this spirit and made the list for the second year in a row.”

Dynamic, desirable and dents wallets only slightly, Mazda’s best-selling vehicle worldwide, the 2015 Mazda3 compact car is available in two’s: body styles – four- and five-door; transmissions – six-speed manual and automatic; and engines – SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter. New-for-2015 is the added availability of the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission for the larger engine, which offers consumers the choice of eight different model configurations.

Also, regardless of vehicle build, Mazda3 offers high fuel economy – up to an EPA-estimated 41 highway mpg for sedans and 40 highway mpg for five-doors – when outfitted with the 2.0L engine.  The brawnier 2.5L offers an estimated 40 highway mpg for sedans while five-doors are EPA-rated at up to 39 highway mpg (with available i-ELOOP).  Pricing for the 2015 Mazda3 starts at $16,945[2] MSRP.

The 2015 Mazda6 continues to push the vanilla-flavored envelope of the mid-size sedan segment with its grin-inducing driving dynamics, chiseled-chin design, award-winning safety and best-in-class highway fuel economy (40 mpg[3]).  Starting at $21,190 MSRP, Mazda6 is currently fitted with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, which can be paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Both vehicles have earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and received a 5-Star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

On January 12, 2015, named its “2015 Most Popular” award winners which included Mazda3 (Compact Car), Mazda CX-5 (Compact Crossover SUV) and Mazda CX-9 (Large Crossover SUV). IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Mazda announced the addition of Liam Dwyer as a full-time racer in the 2015 Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.  Dwyer stunned the racing world in 2014 when he teamed up with Tom Long to co-drive their Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 to the win in the Lime Rock Park Continental Tire ST race on Memorial Day weekend.  The win was a made-for-Hollywood storyline as Dwyer was competing in only his second professional race, and he was doing it with an artificial leg, having been injured while serving as a U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant in Afghanistan just three years previously.

For 2015, Dwyer will be paired up with Andrew Carbonell for the entire ten-race season beginning January 23rd at Daytona International Speedway.  Carbonell scored two wins with Freedom Autosport and Mazda in 2014.

John Doonan, Motorsports Director, Mazda North American Operations:  “While we are all impressed with Liam on so many levels, we have recruited him for the same reason we recruit any driver.  We believe that he can help Mazda win races and the 2015 manufacturers championship.  His personal story is just the icing on the cake and helps us connect with a bigger story.”

Liam Dwyer:  “I am very excited for the 2015 season. I thought things couldn’t get better after last season, but Mazda has once again shown how immensely awesome they are. To be granted a full ride in the Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 is the ultimate dream come true. And on top of that, I have one of the fastest MX-5 drivers, Andrew Carbonell, as my co-driver. I can’t thank Derek Whitis, Rhett O’Doski and everyone at Mazda enough for this opportunity.”

Andrew Carbonell:   “I am excited to be confirmed with Mazda and Freedom Autosport for the 2015 IMSA Continental Tire Challenge season. I am also proud to be co-driving with one of the most incredible racing stories recently; Marine Staff Sergeant Liam Dwyer. I have had the honor of getting to know Liam through the select races he drove with Freedom Autosport in 2014. To watch the inspiration and motivation from Liam from afar makes one understand the sacrifices one makes to follow their dreams whatever the circumstance may be. I look forward to continuing success and adding more victories together for Freedom Autosport and Mazda.”

Derek Whitis, Owner, Freedom Autosport:  “When we created Freedom Autosport, it was to honor the men and women serving in the armed forces, especially the U.S. Marines.  We are honored to have Liam join the team full-time in 2015.  Just as important, we look forward to having additional marines serve other key roles on the team.”

The 2015 Continental Tires SportsCar race schedule is as follows:
